Intruder Shot After Family Barricades Themselves in Bedroom

Intruder Shot After Family Barricades Themselves in Bedroom

This family did everything right after a man broke into their home and assaulted them.

A little before 8:45 PM this past Monday, a man broke into a home in Baxter Springs, KS. He then proceeded to assault two adult occupants of the home. The homeowners then retreated to their bedroom with two juveniles that were also in the house and armed themselves with a gun.

The intruder continued the attack and followed them into the room. That’s when one of the homeowners fired his home defense gun, hitting the suspect in the thigh and calf. The suspect fled on foot, and the homeowners called 911.

Police arriving on the scene found the wounded suspect fleeing the area and detained him before being sent to a local hospital. Officers recovered a 9mm handgun from the scene, but it wasn’t clear if that was the suspect’s gun or the homeowner’s gun.

Home invasions can happen at any time of the day. This one occurred in the evening, which I’m sure caught the homeowners off-guard. But it sounds like they had a good home defense plan and attempted to barricade themselves in a room and arm themselves. Unfortunately for the suspect, he didn’t leave and wound up getting shot.

We say this a lot, but how close is your home defense gun when you are relaxing in the evening watching tv? Do you have a plan to get everyone to a safe room in case of a break-in? It is stories like these that should be reminders to think these things through before they happen to us.
