A North Carolina homeowner found a man in his car, presumably thinking he was attempting to steal it. But the homeowner is the one facing charges.
A 51-year-old man went outside shortly before 3:30 AM this past Tuesday and found a man in his vehicle. We can assume words were exchanged, but the only detail we have about what happened next is that the suspect ran. And that is when the homeowner shot at the fleeing suspect. The suspect was hit, and paramedics took him to the hospital with serious injuries.
A neighbor found two bullet holes in his house as well. It is unclear how many shots the homeowner fired. But he was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. His bond was set at $30,000, and if convicted, he faces 231 months in prison. That’s almost 20 years!
We cannot stress this enough. You have to know your laws. You should know that showing a fleeing suspect is a huge no-no except. If you plan on using a gun for self-defense, whether that’s carrying concealed or just for home defense, an indispensable book is The Law of Self-Defense, written by Attorney Andrew F. Branca. In it, he goes over in great detail the legal side of using a gun for self-defense. There’s a paperback, ebook, and audiobook version. I have all three. This isn’t a book you read or listen to once. It is something you should keep fresh in your mind in case today is the day you use your gun for self-defense. Click the link below to pick up a copy (or two) today.
