This story just made me scratch my head and wonder what this world is coming to. A man is attacked behind the counter of the bodega he was working at. He defends himself with a knife. And then he is charged with murder? Well, I guess it kind of makes sense since it happened in New York City.
Only July 1, a woman was in a New York City bodega attempting to purchase a bag of chips for her daughter. When her EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) card was declined, the woman and the clerk got into an argument. The clerk took the bag of chips from the woman, who then said, “I’m going to get my man, and he’s going to get you.”
The woman and her boyfriend returned and confronted the clerk. The boyfriend can be seen walking behind the counter and pushing the clerk to the ground. At some point, the clerk grabbed a kitchen knife that they use to open boxes and stabbed the man attacking him in the neck and chest. The girlfriend then pulled a knife from her purse and stabbed the clerk.
When the police arrived, they found the wounded man and transported him to the hospital, where he later passed away.
On July 2, the clerk was charged with one count of second-degree murder. The woman who stabbed him was not charged.
Many people are urging Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg to drop the charges against the clerk as he was clearly acting in self-defense. We’ll be keeping our eye on this one to see how it plays out.
