The Kokomo, Indiana Police Department reported that at 3:25 AM on the morning of October 27th, an armed 18-year-old man wearing a ski mask walked into an apartment occupied by three men.
Upon pointing his weapon at the occupants, the three men attacked the intruder, causing him to drop his gun. As the struggle to subdue the assailant continued, the criminal attempted to draw a second handgun. He was quickly disarmed a second time, but not before discharging the firearm. There were no injuries associated with the fired round.
Once the suspect was subdued, one of the residents was able to retrieve his own handgun, and the suspect was detained until police arrived. Police took the intruder to the hospital for the treatment of numerous injuries to the face before being charged with burglary. Additional charges may be forthcoming.
Given the ease with which it seems the intruder was able to walk into the apartment, it may be assumed that the entry door was left unsecured. Add to this the fact that in an apartment, the entry door may be the only means of egress, and it can be reasoned that the door was now blocked by the intruder. It seems the only option the three occupants had (especially with no weapon immediately accessible) was to use their superior numbers to attempt to overpower the attacker. Fortunately, in this case, the three occupants were victorious, and no one in the apartment or an adjacent apartment was hit by the fired round.
