4th of July Home Invasion Attempt in Tucson, AZ Ends in Intruder being Fatally Shot

TUCSON, AZ – On July 4, 2024, a home invasion attempt ended in a fatal shooting in the 100 block of E. Elvado Road, according to the Tucson Police Department. The incident, which occurred just after 1:00 p.m., resulted in the death of 31-year-old Freddy Wayne Batt Jr.

The Public Safety Communications Department received a 9-1-1 call reporting the shooting. Patrol officers arrived at the scene and found Mr. Batt inside the home with gunshot wounds. Officers administered CPR and rendered aid until Tucson Fire Department personnel arrived, but Batt was ultimately pronounced deceased at the scene.

Detectives from the Homicide Unit and the Counter Narcotics Alliance responded to the incident to continue the investigation. After conducting interviews and reviewing evidence, detectives determined that Batt had come to the home and attempted to rob the residents, demanding money and drugs. During the robbery, an adult male who was being confronted produced a firearm and shot Batt.

Following the shooting, the male, his girlfriend, and their two infant children fled the residence and sought help.

While the investigation is ongoing, charges related to the shooting are pending. However, arrests were made for unrelated charges. Once the investigation is complete, detectives will present their findings to the Pima County Attorney’s Office.

This incident underscores the importance of having a firearm for home defense. While we don’t have all the details, the situation could have turned out much worse for the residents had they not been able to defend themselves against the intruder.
