Colorado Man Fatally Shoots 400-pound Bear That Broke Into His Home at 2AM

We cover a lot of “bump in the night” stories here on USA Carry. But this one was a bit different. Instead of a human breaking into a home, this man woke up to a bear in his house!

This past Saturday, a Colorado man awoke to the sound of something rummaging through his house. We grabbed his firearm and found a 400-pound bear eating dog food in his home. Feeling threatened, he fired at the bear until it collapsed.

No one was injured during the incident, and the police removed the bear from the scene.

Apparently, the bear flipped a lever doorknob to gain access to the home. According to Rachel Gonzalez, spokesperson for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, bear break-ins aren’t uncommon. But people shooting them in self-defense is.

It wasn’t reported what time of firearm or caliber the homeowner used. But if I lived in an area where bear break-ins are common, I’d probably have something more than a 9mm on my bedside. I’d at least have a 10mm pistol loaded with Buffalo Bore Heavy 10MM ammo which is what I carried with me when I hunted in bear territory.
