One young man was killed, and another is in the hospital after a shootout last Thursday. Unfortunately, the deceased was the victim with a concealed carry permit.
I’d much rather report on stories where the armed citizen prevails, but sometimes we have ones like this. A 21-year-old man with a Minnesota concealed carry permit walked to his car with food from a convenience store. Another man, also 21 and armed with a pistol, confronted the victim. We can assume he was attempting to rob him.
The 21-year-old victim drew his concealed carry gun and fired first. The suspect fired back at least 12 times. Both men were hit by the gunfire. Police arrived on the scene to find the victim deceased in the street and the suspect wounded in a vehicle nearby. The suspect is charged with second-degree murder and is currently hospitalized.
This is a tragic incident. The young man must not have had his concealed carry permit very long as you have to be 21 years old to apply for one. His mother told the media that he got his concealed carry permit after returning to Minnesota because he feared the danger of the streets in his hometown.
One takeaway from this story is that we as concealed carriers must be diligent in training to become more proficient with our firearms, staying active and healthy, and learning hand-to-hand skills. I’m not saying what happened here was because of a lack of training. But it does make me think that if the time comes that I have to use my gun in self-defense, I want as many advantages on my side as possible.
What’s the use of carrying a gun if you can’t deploy it fast enough or put hits on target? What if you find yourself in a self-defense situation and you have an option of fleeing but can’t run more than ten steps without being out of breath? Not all self-defense encounters warrant drawing a gun. Hand-to-hand skills are important to have as a self-defender. These are just some things for you to think about and reassess your skill level.
