ESPAÑOLA, NM – A suspected burglary at an Española residence turned fatal early Saturday morning when a homeowner shot a man he caught in his garage. The Española Police Department responded to the scene in the 500 block of Middle San Pedro Road following a distress call from the homeowner’s wife at about 4:20 a.m.
The deceased, identified as 28-year-old Pablo Hinz from Hernandez, reportedly initiated an attack on the homeowners, prompting the elderly homeowner to fire his weapon in defense. The confrontation ended with Hinz collapsing on the scene, where he was pronounced dead. The homeowner and his wife emerged from the incident unharmed.
According to the Rio Grand Sun, Hinz was known to local law enforcement, with a record of multiple burglary charges and other criminal activities dating back to 2019. This latest incident adds to the concerns over burglaries and home invasions in the area.
While the homeowner’s quick action safeguarded his family, the incident highlights the potential dangers of confronting trespassers. Homeowners are reminded to prioritize safety by avoiding direct confrontations when possible and instead arming themselves and then securing themselves and calling law enforcement.
