Last Wednesday, a man robbed a business in Grand Prairie, TX. No reports state what type of business or what was stolen. As the suspect was fleeing in a vehicle, an employee of the business fired at him. The suspect was hit and pronounced dead on the scene.
We cannot stress this enough, but you have to know the self-defense laws in your state. But nearly 99% of the time, you cannot fire upon fleeing suspects. Texas does have a law that allows you to use deadly force to protect property, but it does not apply to this case.
And now, the man who fired the shots could be facing jail time for using deadly force when he could have let the suspect drive off with what police described as misdemeanor theft. I know there will be comments such as “If you let them get away with it, they will just do it again” or “This is promoting being a coward.” Think what you want, but I’d be willing to bet that this employee regrets his actions now.
