Father Fatally Shoots 16-Year-Old Daughter Mistaken for an Intruder

Father Fatally Shoots 16-Year-Old Daughter Mistaken for an Intruder

This past Wednesday, a tragic and unfortunate shooting occurred in Ohio when a father mistook his daughter as an intruder.

A husband and wife were woken early Wednesday morning when their home security alarm went off. The husband grabbed his gun to investigate. He encountered what he thought was an intruder in the garage and shot them. Unfortunately, it was his 16-year-old daughter.

The wife called 911 around 4:30 AM to report the shooting. During the 8-minute 911 call, both the girl’s parents can be heard asking her what she was doing and to wake up. Police arrived on the scene within 5 minutes, and the daughter was transported to the hospital, where she passed away an hour later.

This is similar to another story we covered in September when a father mistook his son as an intruder and shot him. This is why target identification is so important, especially if you have kids who could be sneaking in and out of the house while you are unaware. And most of the time, these happen later at night or early in the morning. Having a home defense gun is great, but you also need to have either a weapon-mounted light and/or a flashlight so you can identify the target before firing.
