LAS VEGAS, NV – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has issued a warning to the community about a fake concealed carry weapons (CCW) instructor who has allegedly been conducting fraudulent CCW classes. The instructor, identified as Nephi Oliva, is accused of multiple charges including forgery, fraud or deceit in the course of occupation, and using personal identifying information of another person.
Nephi Oliva, a longtime resident of Las Vegas and the founder of Las Vegas Gunfights, claimed to offer a unique approach to tactical training and gunfight coaching. Oliva, who also runs Vegas CCW, marketed himself as a pioneering figure in full-contact tactical training sports and positioned himself as a top-tier instructor for a wide range of clients, including Special Forces, SWAT teams, professional shooters, and UFC fighters. In collaboration with Major James Sluder of the Air Force Special Operations Forces (Pararescue), Oliva co-authored a book on neurological sighting systems for gunfighting.
However, the LVMPD’s investigation has revealed that Oliva’s credentials as a CCW instructor may not be legitimate. The police are currently reaching out to individuals who may have taken CCW classes from Oliva after August 7, 2023, urging them to come forward with any information related to the case. This call for information is critical to ensuring that individuals who received training from Oliva are aware of the situation and can take appropriate steps to validate their CCW certification.
The LVMPD CCW Detail can be contacted at 702-828-8190 or via email at ccwdetail@lvmpd.com for anyone with information regarding the case or those who have participated in a CCW class taught by Oliva. For those wishing to remain anonymous, they are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555 or online at www.crimestoppersofnv.com.
As this investigation unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder to the gun-owning community to thoroughly vet the credentials of any firearms instructor. Ensuring that instructors are properly certified and accredited is crucial for the safety and legality of firearms training.
