Man Uses “Stand-Your-Ground” and Has Manslaughter Charges Dismissed

Man Uses “Stand-Your-Ground” and Has Manslaughter Charges Dismissed

In the summer of 2021, an altercation outside of a bar in St. Augustine, FL escalated to the point that a man became fearful for his life, drew his handgun, and shot and killed his attacker.

Surveillance video of the incident shows two men engaged in an argument, when one man, along with a third man, began slapping the other. The victim’s glasses were knocked off and he was forced into a corner by one of the men.

No longer able to see and fearful for his life, the victim pulled his handgun and shot one of the attackers several times.

The defender was initially charged with manslaughter. Later, the charges were dismissed as the man and his attorney used “stand-your-ground” to assert self-defense on the man’s behalf.

Although the manslaughter charges were dismissed, the defender is still charged with carrying a concealed weapon into a bar, which is a misdemeanor.

Always be aware of the laws in your area and carry accordingly. Understand the risks if you go places where you cannot legally carry and if you choose to go to these places and not carry, at least attempt to go to the safest of these places and do your best to avoid confrontation. Finally, though this may not have been an issue in this incident, try to avoid going to stupid places, with stupid people, to do stupid things!
