Philadelphia Man Wounded but Fires Back, Injuring Teen Robber in Shootout

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A Saturday night in Philadelphia’s Parkside neighborhood took a dangerous turn when two 16-year-olds attempted to rob 26-year-old Wayne Hamm, who was forced to defend himself in a shootout. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on the 1200 block of 41st Street.

According to Hamm, who is currently recovering in the hospital, the ordeal began with a scuffle during which one of the teens opened fire. Hamm, who was licensed to carry a firearm, responded by drawing his weapon and firing back. One of the attackers was hit multiple times, while the other fled the scene. Hamm himself was shot in the back and arm but managed to run and flag down police officers.

Hamm recounted the surreal nature of the incident, expressing disbelief that his assailants were only 16 years old. “It’s the world nowadays. The young kids don’t have no guidance, and the guidance they are getting is not really so good for them,” he stated in an interview with Action News. His girlfriend, Nacira Scott, who spoke to him just moments before the attack, emphasized how fortunate they felt that Hamm was able to defend himself.

The injured teen suspect is in critical condition at a local hospital. The second suspect, who later arrived at the hospital, was swiftly arrested by authorities. Philadelphia police are investigating whether this attempted robbery is connected to a series of similar crimes in the area. “This area has been on our radar. It very well may be there’s a connection from previous robberies and the one this evening,” noted Philadelphia Police Inspector D.F. Pace.

Two weapons were recovered at the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.

In situations where self-defense becomes necessary, having a clear understanding of the legalities and responsibilities of carrying a firearm can be crucial. It’s also important to stay aware of your surroundings and avoid potentially dangerous situations whenever possible. In this incident, Hamm’s quick thinking and preparedness likely saved his life.
