I would not want to be sitting in my car on Chicago’s South Side at 3:00 AM, but a 42-year-old woman was doing just that when two men, one armed, approached her and attempted to rob her.
The woman, an Illinois concealed carry holder, was able to get her own gun into play and opened fire on the one suspect with the gun. It’s not known if the suspect was hit, but both suspects immediately fled the scene. The woman was not hurt.
Police are still seeking the suspects.
Perhaps this woman had good reason to be in that neighborhood at that hour. Still, this story is a good reminder that one of the ways we can all minimize our chances of being a victim of violent crime is to simply avoid dangerous places at dangerous hours.
Some will say that it’s ok as long as I have my gun, but that’s faulty thinking. I tell all of my students that if you wouldn’t go somewhere without your gun, then don’t there with it either. If you think that a place is dangerous enough that you need a defensive firearm to go there, then just don’t go there unless you have to.
This woman was fortunate in that she won this fight, but she could have lost it too.
